On Monday, June 24, Vice President Kashim Shettima and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, laid their mothers-in-law to rest in Kano.

Hajiya Maryam Abubakar Albishir, Shettima’s mother-in-law, passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness. She was buried on Monday. Ganduje’s mother-in-law, Hajiya Asiya Muhammad Gauyama, who was the mother of Ganduje’s wife, Hafsatu, died on Monday morning and was interred after 3 pm at the Tarauni cemetery.

The funeral prayer for Hajiya Gauyama was led by Sheik Auwalu Khalid, the Imam of the Ganduje residence mosque on Miyangu Road in Kano.

Ganduje, who served as Governor of Kano from 2015 to 2023, arrived in the city on a chartered flight accompanied by family, friends, and political associates. He was received at Aminu Kano International Airport by loyal APC members, who then joined his convoy to his private residence in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Nasarawa local government area.

Earlier, Ganduje’s Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, had announced the passing of Hajiya Gauyama. “It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt sympathy that we announce the passing of Hajiya Asiya Muhammad Gauyama, the beloved mother of Professor Hafsatu Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the wife of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje,” the statement read.

Olofu described Hajiya Gauyama as a “revered matriarch, whose life was characterised by her unwavering commitment to her family, community, and faith.” He added, “Her passing is a profound loss, not only to her immediate family but also to all who knew and loved her.”

The funeral prayer for Hajiya Gauyama was scheduled for 2 pm at Dr. Ganduje’s residence on Miyangu Road in Kano. The statement extended deepest sympathies to Professor Hafsatu Ganduje and her family, noting, “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through this period of grief and loss.”

The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila were among those who attended the burial of the former Governor’s mother-in-law.
