Godswill Akpabio To Senator Natasha Akpoti: We Are Not In A Nightclub

Senate President Godswill Akpabio gently reminded Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) that the Senate chamber is not a night club, and that she must be recognized before speaking during plenary.

According to the report by Daily Trust on Thursday, the exchange occurred during a debate on a bill sponsored by Senator Oyelola Ashiru (APC Kwara South) to establish the National Road Transport Council.

The bill aimed to regulate the road transport industry and transport profession in Nigeria.

While some senators supported the bill, others, including Senators Victor Umeh and Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North), opposed it, citing concerns about duplication of functions with existing agencies like FRSC and VIO.

The lawmakers emphasized that the bill should not be passed at a time when the government is trying to implementing the Oronsaye Report by merging the ministries that carry out similar functions.

During the debate, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stood up without permission to seek clarification. She also suggested that the Senate should look into the issue of water transportation to relief the roads of serious burden.

She said, “Mr President, we don’t want the bill to be killed, we just want a bit of clarification. We don’t want the bill killed, but it should be highly modified.”

In response, Akpabio reminded her about parliamentary decorum.

He said, “Distinguished Senator Natasha, in the chamber, you have to be recognized before you speak. We are not in a nightclub.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan apologized, and the debate continued.

She said, “Oh, pardon me!”

Ultimately, the bill was rejected by the senators.
