Drama As LP National Chairman, Abure, Gets Sacked

The crisis in the Labour Party, LP, has worsened as the National Chairman, Julius Abure, has been sacked.

This was as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission nullified the recent national convention that reelected Abure as the Labour Party’s National Chairman along with the National Working Committee.

Consequently, a Transition Committee has been established to oversee the party’s affairs temporarily.

This decision was reached during a one-day stakeholders meeting in Abuja attended by members of the Labour Party, political commission chairmen from the 36 States and FCT, and founding fathers of the party. The communique was signed by Acting Chairman of the Political Commission, Theophilus Ndubuaku, former NLC president Abdulwahed Omar, and Chairman of the Labour Party’s Board of Trustees, Sylvester Ejiofor.

The commission expressed a vote of no confidence in the purported convention and its resultant leadership. It was resolved that the Transition Committee would manage the party’s affairs until an inclusive national convention could be held. The process would commence from ward congresses, through local government and state congresses, culminating in a national convention in Abuja.

The Transition Committee is tasked with initiating an asset recovery process for all Labour Party properties and auditing cases of fraud, impersonation, and forgery of government documents allegedly involving former party officers. The committee is also mandated to revalidate current party members, register new members, and mobilize for the national convention with a target membership of 10 million.

The stakeholders emphasized the importance of notifying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies of these developments, urging them to recognize the Transition Committee as the interim leadership of the Labour Party. They reiterated the party’s commitment to inclusivity and affirmed that it represents all Nigerians regardless of background.
