The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers classified under Band A.
Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, announced that customers in this category will now pay N225 per kilowatt-hour (KW/h), up from the previous N66 rate.
NERC’s move affects Band A customers, representing 15% of the country’s 12 million electricity consumers, roughly equivalent to 1.8 million subscribers. However, other tariff bands will remain unchanged.
This decision aligns with a report from Bloomberg, which revealed plans to allow power companies to raise electricity prices to N200 ($0.15) per KW/h from the current N68 for urban consumers. The aim is to attract new investment and reduce the $2.3 billion spent on capping tariffs.
In Lagos, Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company detailed the Band A tariff plan for its subscribers, listing areas and their corresponding electricity consumption levels:
