BREAKING: Jonathan, Abdulsalami, Other Bigwigs Attend National Event In Abuja

A gathering of notable figures including former Nigeria’s military Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, and retired Catholic Archbishop John Onaiyekan marks the commencement of a national dialogue on state policing.

The event is taking place in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital. This followed repeated calls by many Nigerians for state police to help curb the rising menace of insecurity in various parts of the country.

This dialogue, convened by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, signifies the initiation of discussions on the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (alteration) bill 2023 (Establishment of State Police). Spearheaded by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and 13 other legislators, the bill aims to address public safety concerns and bolster law enforcement across Nigeria by advocating for police decentralization.

The proposed legislation seeks to introduce state police alongside the federal police, presenting a constitutional framework for states interested in establishing and managing their own law enforcement agencies. This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing security measures and ensuring effective law enforcement nationwide.
