Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, has reacted to the move to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

The group believes that the court, not the Nigerian Government, should determine Kanu’s fate based on proven evidence.

Yerima Shettima, the National President of AYCF, stated that the IPOB leader should face the consequences of his actions if found guilty by the court or be released if proven innocent.

Speaking in an interview, the National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima said: “It’s up to the government to decide whether to settle out of court or allow the court proceedings to continue.

“Personally, I would prefer if the court decided his fate based on the evidence presented. Kanu should face the music if found guilty or be released if innocent. His punishment should serve as a deterrent to those who believe they can disobey the law and act with impunity, whether deliberately or ignorantly.

“However, if the government opts for an out-of-court settlement, then so be it. At least it shows that nobody can act with impunity and get away with it.”

Recall that on Tuesday, South-East Governors announced their intention to engage with the Bola Tinubu-led federal government for the release of Kanu. This decision was part of the communiqué issued after the Forum’s meeting in Enugu.

The meeting, which included other stakeholders, was attended by Southeast Governors. Those present were Governors Hope Uzodinma, Dr. Alex Otti, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru of Imo, Abia, Anambra, and Ebonyi states, respectively, as well as the host, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
